Why People Don’t Want Your Product Or Your Opportunity – By Zeb Olsen

By Zeb Olsen On October 29, 2008 Under Great Articles, Training

Why is it that so many people get into an MLM business and fail?

I believe it comes down to this. People DON’T want your product or your Opportunity. Period. End of Story.

WHAT? You may be thinking has Zeb completely lost his mind, I promote the BEST product and the BEST opportunity in the industry! Surely he’s lost it this time.

Make no mistake my friend, I am sure you have an excellent product, otherwise you wouldn’t be trying to sell it. I am also sure that you have a good/great opportunity to make some money with your opportunity.

However, people don’t want it. Which is why you or others in your downline may be struggling to build a large customer or distributor base.

Confused yet? Well, I know a lot of people are, it’s obvious considering the industry statistics of how many people are NOT making any money.

Here is what people want: They want what your product will/can DO for them. They want the BENEFITS!

They want what’s in it for THEM. If you are in the Health & Wellness industry, people don’t want your SUPER VITAMIN 2000, they want more energy, they want to “feel” good, they want to lose weight, they want sleep better, they want to be healthier, they want to be sick less often, they want to be pain free, they want to live longer, they want the BENEFITS that your product can offer them.

So don’t promote your product, promote what your product can do for them.

Most importantly, is to find out what THEY want. Asking good questions and listening is the # 1 sales skill in the world.

It’s amazing how people (especially in this industry) have one agenda. THEIR OWN.

It’s not your agenda that matters, it is your prospects agenda. What do they want. Do they want/need more energy? How are they sleeping? Do they get sick often? Do they need/want to lose weight? Are they sick and tired of being sick and tired? Are they in pain?

These are questions one would want to know to find out what BENEFITS is going to cause that person to WANT your product. They will tell you what they want/need, you show them how your product can help or solve that issue.

This is a good time to use a story of someone who needed/wanted a similar benefit, and how they started taking your product and it helped them. Remember the old adage “Facts Tell – Stories Sell?”

And, always promote the 100% customer satisfaction guarantee near the end of the process so they feel they have nothing to lose, and possibly GAIN exactly what they want or are looking for.

In regards to your opportunity. People don’t want an MLM. People don’t want another thing to do in their already swamped life.

What people want is more money. They want more time. They want to Fire their Boss. They want to pay less in taxes. They want the convenience of making money from home.

They want the BENEFITS that can come along with working a home business effectively, efficiently, consistently, and persistently. THAT’S IT!

They don’t want to promote the next latest and greatest, they really don’t. They want more money, more time, to do the things they can’t afford to do now, or don’t have the time to do now.

If nothing changes in their life, nothing ever will. So, when would NOW be a good time for them to start looking at alternative ways to get them the money, the time, etc. to do the things they have always wanted to do, that they haven’t been able to do.

Ask questions and Listen! What do THEY want?

It’s not what you THINK they want. They will tell you what they want if you ask the right questions and listen. Then, focus on what they want, and you can’t lose. Use a good story that relates to their situation. And, Remember, it’s about them.

To take this a step further, find out what it is that’s been preventing them from getting what they want, and how that is painful.

There are Two things that move people to take action: the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain. By asking the right questions, you know what they want (pleasure), you know what they don’t want, and what’s been holding them back.

You provide a simple clear cut solution that offers what they want, helps them prevent what they don’t want, and Bingo Bango you just might have triggered some emotion that empowers them to start believing that they can get what they want, avoid what they don’t want, and you just might have the vehicle to help them get there.

Make it become THEIR idea to want to get involved with your business opportunity.

This process is all about finding out what people want and need and presenting your product or opportunity in a way that positions it as “THE” solution to their problems, and a solution to get what THEY WANT.

This short story should help drive this point home:

Brian Tracy tells the story of a couple who are looking to buy a home. As the couple walks up to the home the woman exclaims, ‘Wow! There is a cherry tree in the back! I have always wanted a cherry tree!’ The salesman makes a note of this and walks them into the home. The husband says, “The kitchen is too small” and the salesman replies, “Yes, but look through the window and you have a perfect view of the cherry tree.” The husband walks into the backyard and says, “We don’t want to have to take care of a swimming pool.” The salesman says, “Yes, but you can put a chair right here and sit under the cherry tree anytime you like.” The husband was using logic and the salesman emotion. The couple bought the house because of that.

Emotion is what it is all about like it or not. The problem with emotion is that too many people get in based on emotion and not enough logic. Emotion is what fuels a lot of the scams that come in and out of the scene and give out industry a bad name. Emotion carries with it a responsibility.

Well Said Shawn. Emotion must used responsibly and ethically. You’ll find a lot of not so great opportunities will create false emotions using pump up music and what not. Not Cool.

Using emotions to help people get what they want and need is the key.

Thanks again for the comment Shawn.

And, others please… your 2 cents is welcome and appreciated.
